What is Third Cultured?
Third Cultured is an international politics and LGBTQ+ culture newsletter written by yours truly, Kyle Borland. To be a “third culture individual” means “someone raised in a culture other than their parents' or the culture of their country of nationality.”
Being a gay damn Yankee raised on military bases in Europe and the Deep South, I check the “Third Cultured” box several times over. Queer culture itself is a kind of third culture and navigating the cishet-dominated world as a Queer person is difficult on a good day.
As a community, LGBTQ+ people have become a global force – both politically and economically – and that growth has come with blessings and consequences.
Third Cultured aims to explore the good, the bad, and the ugly facing LGBTQ+ people, while fostering a community that understands the unique role Queer people play in the US and the world at large. I hope that’s you!

Grow the community!
My goal is to create a community that cares about foreign affairs while understanding the unique role Queer people play in the United States and the world-at-large. If that description makes you think of anyone, make sure to share Third Cultured with them!
